SUMMARY:Texas Lowcountry: Slavery and Freedom on the Texas Coast
DESCRIPTION:Dr. John Lundberg\, Professor of History at Tarrant County College\, shares his latest book Texas Lowcountry: Slavery and Freedom on the Texas Coast. Dr. Lundberg will discuss the competing cultures and peoples that made up the Texas Lowcountry between 1822 and 1840. He will then explore the history of the enslavers and the enslaved between 1840 and 1865. To conclude his discussion\, Dr. Lundberg will investigate the experiences of freed people in the region during the Reconstruction era to 1895.\nBefore the Civil War\, European immigrants\, particularly Germans\, poured into Texas bringing with them cultural ideals about slavery. This\, combined with the majority of the population from southern slaveholding states\, complicated the story of slavery. By 1861\, more than 70% of this region’s population were enslaved people. In closely examining this unique pocket of Texas\, Lundberg provides a new and much-needed\, region-specific study of the culture of enslavement and the African-American experience.\nThe book\, recently published by Texas A&M University Press\, will be available for purchase in our Windows Book and Gift Shop. Dr. Lundberg will also be on hand to autograph purchased copies. \nThis program is open and free to the public.

It was a brief (15-minute) sub-orbital flight\, but it gave the U.S. the confidence to further prove its technological capabilities in the new space age. Only twenty days later\, President John F. Kennedy went before Congress and called for a national effort to land men on the Moon and return them safely to Earth within the decade. This challenge led to the most ambitious space project ever attempted – Project Apollo.
